Year: 1982
Platform: Intellivision

Shark! Shark! is an action shoot‑’em‑up released for the Intellivision in 1982. Players control a small fish swimming in an underwater arena, with the objective of eating smaller fish to grow while avoiding larger sea creatures that pose a threat. The game was designed by Don Daglow and programmed by Ji‑Wen Tsao, one of the first female console game programmers.

Gameplay involves navigating the limited playfield and consuming progressively larger fish to increase in size. As the player grows, new hazards appear, including crabs, lobsters, jellyfish, and eventually a fast-moving shark. Growth increases the player’s size but reduces speed and agility, adding a strategic balance between risk and reward. Players can defeat the shark by repeatedly nibbling its tail, which grants extra points.

Visually, the game uses colorful sprites and simple animations to depict the underwater environment and the player’s fish. Each growth stage is clearly indicated, and enemies are easily distinguishable. The game’s design focuses on creating an engaging and dynamic underwater experience despite hardware limitations.

Shark! Shark! was well received upon release and became popular enough to warrant additional cartridge production. It was praised for its unique gameplay, strategic elements, and charming visual style. Critical reception on modern review aggregators indicates it remains a notable title in the Intellivision library, with both critics and players appreciating its design and replay value.
