TRON: Maze-A-TRON is an action and maze exploration game released for the Intellivision in 1982. Developed and published by Mattel Electronics, the game is based on the 1982 Disney film TRON. Players assume the role of Flynn, a computer programmer who has been digitized into a computer system and must navigate through its circuits to confront the Master Control Program (MCP).
The gameplay is divided into two phases. In the first phase, players guide Flynn through a maze representing the internal circuits of the computer. The objective is to collect energy to reset RAM chips while avoiding or confronting Recognizers, which serve as the system’s defense mechanisms. Players can utilize shields to protect themselves, but these consume energy, requiring strategic management.
In the second phase, players face the MCP in a direct confrontation. Using a bit gun, players must identify and shoot pairs of bits that match a given pattern. The MCP retaliates with laser beams, and players must avoid these attacks while completing the task. Successfully completing both phases advances the game to higher difficulty levels.
TRON: Maze-A-TRON was notable for its unique blend of maze navigation and action elements, offering a distinctive experience on the Intellivision platform. The game’s design and mechanics were inspired by the film’s depiction of a digital world, aiming to provide players with an immersive experience.
