Blue Dragon is a Japanese role-playing game directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, and features character designs by Akira Toriyama, known for his work on Dragon Ball. It was developed specifically for the Xbox 360, marking one of Microsoft’s major attempts to gain traction in the Japanese market by leveraging renowned Japanese talent.
The game follows protagonist Shu and his friends, who harness the power of magical shadow creatures to battle the evil forces threatening their world. Combat is turn-based, using a traditional JRPG system with an emphasis on strategy and character development. Each character is accompanied by a unique shadow creature that can be customized with various classes and abilities.
Blue Dragon utilizes a world map with visible enemies, allowing players to choose when to engage in battle. The storyline spans three dual-layer DVDs, making it one of the most expansive RPGs on the Xbox 360 in terms of storage size and content. Its linear narrative is complemented by exploration elements and side quests.
The Xbox 360 version is notable for its use of the console’s HD graphics to deliver vibrant visuals that mirror Toriyama’s art style. It also includes English and Japanese voice tracks and was localized for Western audiences following its Japanese release.
