Players engage in intense combat missions across various international locations, including the United States, Russia, and Brazil.

The single-player campaign follows multiple protagonists, such as Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson and the iconic Captain John “Soap” MacTavish, as they battle terrorist forces led by the antagonist Makarov. The storyline features cinematic sequences, high-stakes operations, and scripted events designed to deliver a dramatic and immersive experience.

Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer mode expanded the series’ offerings with new killstreak rewards, customizable loadouts, and a wider range of maps and game modes. It supports up to 18 players on Xbox Live, fostering competitive and cooperative gameplay. The game also introduced the controversial “Spec Ops” mode, a series of cooperative missions separate from the main campaign.
