Dead Island

Genre: Action (first-person shooter / survival horror)
Developer: Techland
Publisher: Deep Silver
Year: 2011
Platform: Xbox 360

Dead Island takes place on the fictional island of Banoi, a tropical resort suddenly overrun by a violent zombie outbreak. Players choose one of four survivors, each with unique skills and weapon specializations, as they attempt to escape the chaos. The game combines first-person melee combat, exploration, and role-playing elements, creating a hybrid between an open-world action title and a survival horror experience.

The gameplay focuses heavily on hand-to-hand combat, using improvised melee weapons that degrade with use and must be repaired or upgraded at workbenches. Players can also craft modified weapons using found materials to add elemental damage or special effects. Experience points earned through combat and quests allow for character progression via skill trees, encouraging distinct playstyles across the four protagonists.

The island setting offers a mix of open environments such as beaches, jungles, and urban resort areas. Missions range from story-driven objectives to side quests provided by non-playable characters scattered across safe zones. Cooperative play for up to four players online or locally reinforces the emphasis on teamwork in surviving the infected hordes.

Critical reception for the Xbox 360 version was generally positive, with praise directed at the game’s atmosphere, detailed environments, and visceral combat system. Criticism focused on repetitive quests, technical issues, and uneven pacing. Despite these flaws, Dead Island became known as a distinctive entry in the zombie survival genre, valued for its blend of open-world design and brutal melee mechanics.
