Duke Nukem Forever is a first-person shooter that was in development for over 14 years before its release in 2011. Initially developed by 3D Realms and later completed by Triptych Games and Gearbox Software, the game continues the exploits of Duke Nukem, a hyper-masculine action hero from the 1990s.
Set in a near-future version of Earth, the game finds Duke returning to battle an alien invasion that threatens humanity. The narrative is linear, mixing humor, crude jokes, and satirical pop culture references. Players control Duke through a series of combat-heavy missions filled with alien enemies, environmental puzzles, and scripted set pieces.
The gameplay includes standard shooting mechanics with a limited two-weapon system, regenerating health (called “Ego”), and interactive elements like driving sequences and minigames. Levels are varied, ranging from casinos and desert highways to alien lairs. Unlike previous entries, Duke Nukem Forever uses a modern checkpoint system and features online multiplayer modes such as deathmatch and team-based play.
