Genre: Racing / Arcade
Developer: BigPark
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Year: 2010
Platform: Xbox 360

Kinect Joy Ride is an arcade-style racing game developed by BigPark and released for Xbox 360 in 2010 as part of the launch lineup for the Kinect motion sensor. Originally planned as a free Xbox Live Arcade title using avatars and standard controllers, the project was reworked into a full retail game that utilizes Kinect’s motion-sensing capabilities to control vehicles using body gestures.

The game features a variety of tracks set in stylized environments, such as cityscapes, beachside roads, and icy mountain passes. Players steer by holding their arms out like a virtual steering wheel and can perform tricks, drift, and boost by leaning and making specific motions. It supports multiple game modes, including Pro Race, Battle Race, Stunt, Dash, and Smash, each offering different gameplay objectives and challenges.

Kinect Joy Ride includes both single-player and two-player local multiplayer modes. Players race against AI or each other using Xbox 360 Avatars as their in-game drivers. The game emphasizes accessibility and casual fun over realistic driving physics, aiming for a lighthearted experience appropriate for all ages. Online play was also available through Xbox Live, enabling multiplayer races with up to eight players.

Upon release, Kinect Joy Ride received mixed critical reviews. While some praised its colorful visuals and party-friendly design, others criticized the responsiveness of the motion controls and noted a lack of depth compared to traditional racing games. The game’s average Metacritic score is in the low 50s, reflecting its divisive reception among both players and critics.
