NHL 09 is an ice hockey simulation game developed by EA Canada and published by EA Sports, released in 2008 for Xbox 360 and other platforms. As the 18th installment in the NHL video game series, it builds on the foundation laid by its predecessors while introducing several notable features aimed at enhancing realism and player engagement.

One of the game’s most significant additions is the “Be a Pro” mode, where players create or assume control of a single athlete and guide them through a professional career, starting in the AHL with the aim of reaching the NHL. This mode offers a new perspective by focusing on individual performance rather than team management. Traditional game modes such as Season, Playoffs, and Online Versus are also included, alongside team and roster customization.

NHL 09 retains the Skill Stick control system, allowing for precise puck handling, shooting, and deking using the right analog stick. Defensive tools were also expanded, with improved poke checks and positional AI enhancing gameplay balance. The title supports online multiplayer, including full six-on-six team play.

The game was positively received for its refined mechanics, depth of modes, and accessible controls. On Xbox 360, it achieved a Metacritic score in the mid-80s, with critics highlighting the strong evolution of the series and the depth offered by the new career-focused gameplay.
