SSX is a reboot of the long-running SSX snowboarding series, developed by EA Canada and released in 2012 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This installment modernizes the franchise by introducing real-world mountain ranges, a dynamic physics engine, and new gameplay modes while retaining the arcade-style tricks and fast-paced racing the series is known for.
Players control a team of elite snowboarders from the SSX roster as they take on “the Nine Deadly Descents,” a globe-spanning campaign that features extreme environments such as the Himalayas, the Rockies, and Antarctica. Each descent poses unique challenges like avalanches, low oxygen, and ice hazards, requiring different gear and strategies to overcome.
The game includes both Race and Trick events, as well as Survival runs that emphasize adaptation to environmental dangers. It also introduces RiderNet, an asynchronous online system that tracks player progress, challenges friends, and delivers community-based updates.
Upon release, SSX received generally favorable reviews. Critics praised its return to form, the variety of environments, and the integration of modern online features. Some noted that the absence of split-screen multiplayer was a drawback, but the gameplay depth and visual design were widely appreciated.
