Velvet Assassin is a stealth-action game developed by Replay Studios and released in 2009 for Xbox 360 and PC. The game is loosely inspired by the real-life British secret agent Violette Szabo and follows protagonist Violette Summer, a British spy operating behind enemy lines during World War II.

Set across a series of missions in occupied Europe, the game emphasizes stealth over direct combat. Players are encouraged to move silently through environments, eliminate enemies quietly, and use the shadows for cover. Combat is deliberately limited, with gunplay being a last resort due to limited resources and high enemy alertness. The game also introduces a “Morphine Mode” mechanic, allowing players to momentarily slow down time for tactical advantage.

The Xbox 360 version offers a linear narrative-driven experience, focusing on atmospheric visuals and a somber tone. Missions range from sabotaging military infrastructure to rescuing prisoners, with each level designed around stealth and exploration rather than action-heavy encounters.

Reception was mixed. Critics praised the game’s historical setting and visual style but criticized the rigid AI, inconsistent difficulty, and limited player choice. While not a commercial success, the game has been noted for its unique premise and serious tone within the stealth genre.
