Genre: Role-playing
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
Publisher: Private Division
Year: 2019

The Outer Worlds is a single-player first-person role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and released for Xbox One in 2019. Set in an alternate future where megacorporations colonize space, the game takes place in the Halcyon colony, a remote star system on the edge of the galaxy.

Players awaken from cryosleep aboard a lost colonist ship and are drawn into a conspiracy that threatens the colony’s stability. The game offers a branching narrative, where player choices influence character relationships, faction standings, and story outcomes. Players can create their own character, assign attributes and skills, and recruit companions with unique personalities and abilities.

Gameplay includes dialogue trees, exploration, combat with ranged and melee weapons, and stealth mechanics. The game features a “Tactical Time Dilation” system, which allows players to slow down time during combat. Players can also customize gear, modify weapons, and specialize in skills like hacking, persuasion, or science to shape their playstyle.

The Xbox One version includes performance optimizations and supports achievements and cloud saves via Xbox Live. Though primarily a story-driven experience, The Outer Worlds also offers multiple endings and encourages replayability through its flexible quest and character systems.
