Crash Nitro Kart is a kart racing game developed by Vicarious Visions and released for Xbox in 2003. It is part of the Crash Bandicoot franchise and follows the traditional kart racing formula established in earlier titles, featuring familiar characters, power-ups, and themed racetracks.
In the game’s story mode, Crash and his allies are abducted by the alien emperor Velo XXVII and forced to participate in a galactic racing tournament. The Adventure mode combines racing challenges with cutscenes that drive the narrative forward. Players can also choose from other modes including Time Trial, Arcade, and Battle. The Xbox version supports up to four players in split-screen multiplayer.
Gameplay centers around fast-paced races with collectible power-ups, turbo boosts, and environmental hazards. The game includes a variety of characters from the Crash universe, each with their own kart stats. The tracks are set in different environments, many of which feature unique elements such as loops, jumps, and gravity-defying sections.
The Xbox version of Crash Nitro Kart received mixed reviews. On Metacritic, it holds a score of 69 based on 24 critic reviews. While praised for its visual presentation and multiplayer features, it was criticized for rubber-band AI and controls that were considered less tight than other kart racers.
