Driv3r (also known as Driver 3) is an action-adventure game developed by Reflections Interactive and published by Atari for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Windows in 2004. It is the third installment in the Driver series and continues the story of undercover cop John Tanner as he infiltrates criminal organizations across several international cities.
The game combines open-world driving with on-foot missions, including shootouts and exploration. Players navigate urban environments such as Miami, Nice, and Istanbul, using vehicles to pursue or escape enemies and complete a variety of story-driven objectives. Unlike its predecessors, Driv3r introduces third-person shooting mechanics and combat both inside and outside vehicles.
The Xbox version features detailed 3D cityscapes with traffic systems, pedestrian AI, and diverse mission types ranging from car chases to platforming sections. The game supports single-player campaign and multiplayer modes, including cooperative play and competitive races. Controls were designed to accommodate both driving and combat seamlessly.
Driv3r received mixed reviews upon release. Praise was given to its ambitious open-world design and mission variety, but criticism focused on technical issues, inconsistent AI behavior, and control challenges. Despite flaws, it remains a notable entry in the Driver franchise, expanding the series’ scope beyond pure driving into action-adventure territory.
