Eragon is an action-adventure game developed by Stormfront Studios and published by Vivendi Games, released for the Xbox in 2006. The game is based on the 2006 film of the same name, which in turn is adapted from the fantasy novel by Christopher Paolini. It follows the journey of Eragon, a young farm boy who discovers he is the last of the Dragon Riders.
The gameplay is primarily focused on third-person melee combat, ranged attacks using a bow, and the use of magic to defeat enemies and solve environmental puzzles. Players control Eragon through linear levels, battling against groups of enemies using combos, spells, and special moves. The game includes occasional dragon-riding sequences, where players take control of Saphira in aerial combat.
The Xbox version features cooperative multiplayer, allowing a second player to join as Eragon’s ally Brom. The visuals and sound design aim to replicate the film’s atmosphere, with voice acting provided by members of the movie cast. Each level is structured to align with scenes from the film, interspersed with cutscenes that progress the narrative.
Eragon received mostly negative to mixed reviews. While some aspects such as the cooperative mode and visual presentation were noted positively, the game was widely criticized for its repetitive combat, short length, and lack of depth. The Xbox version holds a Metacritic score of 46/100.
