Fable is an action role-playing game developed by Big Blue Box and Lionhead Studios, and published by Microsoft Game Studios exclusively for the Xbox in 2004. Set in the fantasy world of Albion, the game is centered around the life of a Hero whose actions shape his physical appearance, moral alignment, and reputation.

Players begin as a young boy whose village is attacked, setting off a journey that spans childhood, adulthood, and beyond. The gameplay blends real-time combat with exploration, magic, and character development. Players can engage in quests, interact with NPCs, trade, purchase property, and customize their hero’s skills and equipment.

A key feature of Fable is its morality system, which dynamically changes the character’s appearance and how the world reacts to them based on choices made throughout the game. Good-aligned actions may result in a glowing halo and admiration from townsfolk, while evil deeds cause demonic features and fear from others. The real-time combat system includes melee weapons, ranged attacks, and Will (magic) abilities.

The Xbox version of Fable was lauded for its engaging gameplay, artistic design, and choice-driven narrative, though some critics noted that certain features originally promoted were scaled back. Nevertheless, it became one of the platform’s most successful RPGs. The game holds a Metacritic score of 85/100 for the Xbox version.
