Gun Metal is a futuristic third-person shooter in which players control a hybrid combat vehicle capable of transforming between a heavily armed jet and a walking mech. Set in the distant future on the planet Helios, the game follows the defense of a human colony under siege by a hostile force, with the player piloting the prototype war machine known as the Havoc Suit.
The gameplay revolves around completing a variety of missions involving air-to-ground assaults, escort tasks, and large-scale battles. The transformation mechanic is central to the experience: the mech mode provides powerful ground-based weaponry and close-range combat capabilities, while the jet mode offers speed, mobility, and aerial firepower. Players can switch modes at any time to adapt to the mission and enemy types.
Across its 14 missions, the game introduces new weapons and upgrades that enhance both combat modes. Missions range from attacking enemy convoys and defending installations to facing off against massive boss units. Each mission is prefaced with a briefing and cutscenes that move the narrative forward, though the focus remains largely on action.
Gun Metal was developed for Microsoft Xbox and also released for Windows. The Xbox version was one of the early titles to showcase large environments and dynamic transformations on the console.
