James Cameron’s Dark Angel is a third-person action game developed by Radical Entertainment and released for the Xbox in 2002. The game is based on the television series Dark Angel, which aired from 2000 to 2002. It features the likeness and voice of Jessica Alba as Max Guevara, a genetically enhanced super-soldier living in a dystopian future. The Xbox version is identical in content to the PlayStation 2 release and offers a single-player experience centered around hand-to-hand combat and stealth.
Set in a post-apocalyptic Seattle, the story takes place after the events of the show’s second season. Players control Max as she searches for her missing friend Logan Cale and uncovers a conspiracy involving a secret genetic facility. The game’s narrative was written with involvement from the show’s creators and expands on the original television storyline.
Gameplay is focused on close-quarters combat, with Max using punches, kicks, and combo moves to defeat enemies. Players can also perform stealth takedowns, acrobatic maneuvers, and environmental interactions such as climbing and jumping. Weapons are minimal, in keeping with Max’s martial-arts-based fighting style. Levels include warehouses, laboratories, city streets, and sewers, all populated with guards, drones, and other enemies.
The Xbox version benefits from slightly sharper visuals and smoother performance compared to its PlayStation 2 counterpart, but otherwise offers the same mechanics and level design. The game supports basic save functionality through the Xbox hard drive and does not include multiplayer or online features.
Reception to James Cameron’s Dark Angel was mixed. While fans appreciated the inclusion of the series’ characters and setting, critics pointed to repetitive gameplay, dated graphics, and limited variety in level design. It remains one of the few licensed video games tied to a television series that featured direct involvement from its lead actor.
