Mafia is an action-adventure game developed by Illusion Softworks and originally released for PC in 2002. The Xbox version, published by Gathering, followed in 2004. The game is set in the fictional American city of Lost Heaven during the 1930s and follows the rise of taxi driver Tommy Angelo as he becomes involved with the Salieri crime family.
Gameplay combines third-person shooting, driving, and mission-based storytelling across a large open-world environment. The game features a narrative-driven structure, with missions that include car chases, shootouts, smuggling, and stealth segments. A strong emphasis is placed on realistic driving physics, law enforcement AI, and period-accurate vehicles and weapons.
The Xbox version includes the same storyline and missions as the PC original but was technically constrained by the hardware. As a result, visual fidelity and performance were scaled back. However, the game retains the same voice acting, orchestral soundtrack, and cutscene-driven presentation that contribute to its cinematic feel.
Mafia received critical acclaim on PC for its mature storytelling and atmosphere, while the Xbox version garnered mixed reviews due to downgraded graphics and performance issues. The Xbox version holds a Metacritic score of 65/100.
