Year: 2003
System: Microsoft Xbox

Pirates of the Caribbean is an action role-playing game developed by Akella and published by Bethesda Softworks. Released in 2003 for the Xbox and Windows, the game originally began development as Sea Dogs II but was rebranded to coincide with the release of the Pirates of the Caribbean film, though it is not a direct adaptation of the movie’s plot.

Set in the 17th-century Caribbean, players assume the role of Nathaniel Hawk, a privateer navigating the dangerous waters between colonial powers, pirates, and supernatural threats. The gameplay blends land-based sword combat and questing with naval battles and ship management. Players can sail freely between islands, upgrade their ships, trade goods, and engage in diplomacy or piracy.

The Xbox version features a large open world with weather effects, day-night cycles, and RPG elements such as leveling, skill development, and customizable crew assignments. Combat can occur both at sea—where players maneuver and fire ship cannons—and on land, using melee weapons in real-time action sequences.

The game received mixed reviews, with praise for its ambition and scope, but criticism for its technical issues and lack of narrative connection to the film. The Xbox version holds a Metacritic score of 64/100.
