The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is an action hack-and-slash game developed by EA Redwood Shores and published by Electronic Arts. Released in 2003 for multiple platforms, including the Xbox, it is based on the final film in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and features direct audio and visual assets from the movie.

The game follows three main story paths: Gandalf’s path, the path of the hobbits Sam and Frodo, and the warrior path shared by Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. Each path covers events from the film and includes levels set in major locations such as Minas Tirith, the Black Gate, and Mount Doom. Players battle large numbers of enemies using melee attacks, ranged weapons, and character-specific abilities.

The Xbox version supports both single-player and two-player cooperative gameplay. Characters level up and unlock new moves and combos as players progress, adding an RPG-like progression system. The game includes voice acting from the film’s cast and incorporates cinematic cutscenes to enhance storytelling.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King received strong reviews for its visuals, sound design, and satisfying combat. The Xbox version holds a Metacritic score of 85/100.
