1080° Avalanche is a snowboarding racing game and the direct sequel to 1080° Snowboarding for the Nintendo 64. It was developed by Nintendo Software Technology, a first-party studio of Nintendo, and published by Nintendo. The game focuses primarily on fast downhill racing rather than complex trick systems, setting it apart from other snowboarding games released around the same period.
The title features several gameplay modes, including Match Race, Trick Attack, Time Trial, Gate, and the signature Avalanche mode, in which players must race to the finish while being pursued by a massive snow slide. There are more than twenty courses, with a mix of realistic and novelty boards available as unlockables, some designed with humorous or unusual themes.
The GameCube version supports progressive scan (480p), Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, local multiplayer for up to four players, and LAN connectivity for linking up to four GameCube consoles. A special double-disc edition was also produced for the North American market, which included a bonus mini-DVD featuring professional snowboarding footage set to the game’s soundtrack. This edition was identifiable by a red sash printed on the game’s cover art.
The game was released in Europe on November 28 2003, in North America on December 1 2003, and in Japan on January 22 2004. It remained exclusive to the GameCube throughout its lifespan.
