Dark Reign: The Future of War is a real-time strategy game developed by Auran and published by Activision in 1997 for Microsoft Windows. The game is set in a sci-fi future where humanity is divided among the Imperium, Freedom Guard, and a third faction known as the Tograns. The story follows a surviving Togran who undertakes a time-travel mission to save their civilization.

Gameplay emphasizes strategic complexity with the incorporation of terrain elevation, line-of-sight mechanics, and advanced fog-of-war behavior. Units and buildings exhibit detailed behaviors—such as patrol routes, retreat thresholds, and infiltration capabilities—adding depth to tactical planning. The game also includes a mission construction kit that allows players to design custom maps, missions, and entire campaigns.

Players engage in a single-player campaign that covers thirteen missions, with the option to play from the perspective of multiple factions. Multiplayer is also supported, enabling online matches over internet or LAN connections. Combat involves a variety of tactical options including suicide attacks, sabotage, and special unit abilities, offering a wide range of strategies.

Dark Reign was commercially successful and well-received by critics. It sold hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide and was praised for its intelligent AI, innovative strategic mechanics, and editor tools. Its legacy extended with the release of the expansion Rise of the Shadowhand in 1998 and a prequel, Dark Reign 2, in 2000.
