Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition is an expanded version of the original Duke Nukem 3D, released in 1996. Developed and published by 3D Realms, this edition includes the original three episodes plus a fourth episode titled “The Birth.” The Atomic Edition also features new enemies, weapons, and levels, along with gameplay refinements and bug fixes.
The game retains the fast-paced, action-oriented first-person shooting mechanics of the base title, combined with exploration elements and interactive environments. Players once again step into the boots of Duke Nukem, battling alien invaders across a variety of settings, from urban environments to outer space. The new episode adds additional locations and challenges, expanding on the original content.
Visually, the Atomic Edition uses the Build engine, known for its detailed, interactive 2.5D environments. The game includes humorous and irreverent references to pop culture, a signature element of the Duke Nukem franchise. Multiplayer modes are also included, supporting deathmatch and cooperative play.
