Earth 2140 is a real-time strategy game developed by what was then TopWare Interactive Poland (later Reality Pump Studios), and published for PC by Interplay Productions (and TopWare Interactive) in 1997. Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the game pits two powerful factions—the United Civilized States (UCS) and the Eurasian Dynasty (ED)—against each other in a struggle to control Earth’s depleted natural resources.
Gameplay centers on resource collection, base construction, and managing diverse military units including ground vehicles, mechs, flying crafts, and ships. Players build mining facilities, production structures, and advanced weapons factories. The game economy involves sending units to extract ore and deliver it to refineries, with power and unit caps influencing strategy. Capturing enemy structures is possible through overpowering garrisoned buildings, adding tactical layers to territorial control.
Mission pacing is supported by an advanced AI for its time and more than 50 single-player missions, enriched by cinematic cutscenes and faction-specific strengths. The UCS uses automated robotic infantry and high-tech weaponry while the ED relies on heavier armor and conventional warfare tools, providing asymmetrical gameplay approaches. The game also includes multiplayer support, enabling competitive skirmishes between players.
Upon release, Earth 2140 drew comparisons to Command & Conquer due to its real-time strategy roots, though reviewer sentiment acknowledged it as a competent successor with unique features like elevated unit selection—some describing it as a more thorough evolution of the Dune II-style genre. GameSpot gave it a moderate review score, and retrospectives credit its strategic depth and AI as standout elements despite a somewhat derivative appearance.
