Genre: Survival Horror
Developer: Heavy Iron Studios
Publisher: THQ
Year: 2000
Platform: PC

Evil Dead: Hail to the King is a survival horror game developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ. Released in 2000, it is based on Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead film franchise and serves as a sequel to Army of Darkness. The game continues the adventures of protagonist Ash Williams, voiced by Bruce Campbell, as he confronts the undead once more.

The story is set eight years after the events of Army of Darkness. Ash, now traumatized by his previous encounters, returns to the infamous cabin in the woods with his girlfriend Jenny. Their trip quickly turns into another nightmare as the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis unleashes Deadites upon the world. Players must guide Ash through multiple environments, including forests, swamps, and alternate dimensions, to stop the evil once again.

Gameplay follows a third-person, fixed-camera survival horror style similar to the Resident Evil series of the time. Players use melee and ranged weapons, such as Ash’s iconic chainsaw-hand and shotgun, while managing limited ammunition and health supplies. The game features puzzle-solving elements alongside combat, and a mix of scripted story sequences and exploration.

Critical reception to the PC version was mixed to negative, with some praise for Bruce Campbell’s voice work and fan service, but criticism for dated graphics, awkward controls, and repetitive gameplay. Despite its reception, it remains a notable early attempt to bring the Evil Dead universe into interactive form.
