Rambo: The Video Game is a first-person rail shooter based on the first three films in the Rambo movie franchise — First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Rambo III. Players assume the role of John Rambo, reliving key events from the films through on-rails shooting sequences, quick-time events, and stealth segments. The game follows a linear structure, with the player’s movement guided automatically while aiming and shooting at enemies in real time.
Combat in the game primarily revolves around the use of assault rifles, machine guns, and bows, with some sequences featuring explosives and mounted weapons. Quick-time events are used to recreate cinematic moments from the films, such as melee combat or escape scenes. Stealth elements appear in certain missions, requiring players to eliminate enemies quietly to progress without triggering alarms.
The PC version supports both keyboard and mouse as well as compatible controllers, with no free-movement option due to its rail shooter design. Environments are designed to replicate key film locations, including the forests of Hope, Washington, the jungles of Vietnam, and the deserts of Afghanistan. Cutscenes incorporate both in-game graphics and audio clips taken directly from the original films, including the voices of Sylvester Stallone and Richard Crenna.
The game includes a scoring and ranking system that rewards accuracy, combos, and efficient enemy elimination. Players can also unlock upgrades to weapons and abilities, enhancing firepower and survivability. Additional challenge modes are available outside the main campaign for replayability.
