Renegade: The Battle for Jacob’s Star is a space combat simulation set in the BattleTech universe, focusing on aerospace fighter engagements rather than ground-based ‘Mech combat. The game is based on FASA’s AeroTech tabletop rules and takes place during the Clan Invasion era, following events on and around the planet Jacob’s Star. Players assume the role of a mercenary pilot involved in a complex conflict between the invading Clans and the Inner Sphere factions.

Gameplay centers around piloting various aerospace fighters in 3D space battles. Missions typically involve dogfighting with enemy craft, escorting transports, or performing reconnaissance runs. Each fighter has unique handling characteristics, weapon loadouts, and performance statistics, and players can customize their arsenal before each sortie. The game also includes a strategic layer, with mission outcomes affecting the progression of the storyline and the overall war effort.

Renegade incorporates both a campaign mode with branching mission paths and a simulator mode for standalone battles. The campaign features briefings, debriefings, and character interactions that advance the plot, as well as the option to choose between different contracts and employers. The title aims to blend tactical decision-making with fast-paced combat, requiring players to manage energy levels, weapon heat, and damage control in the middle of engagements.
