Republic: The Revolution is a political simulation strategy game set in the fictional post-Soviet state of Novistrana. The player assumes the role of a political dissident seeking to overthrow the existing regime and rise to power. The game’s world is dynamic, with events, population moods, and political allegiances shifting based on the player’s decisions and activities.
Gameplay is structured around three main stages: starting as a grassroots activist, expanding influence through various means such as propaganda, intimidation, and bribery, and ultimately seizing control of the country. Each district of Novistrana is populated with individuals and factions that can be persuaded, coerced, or manipulated to support the player’s cause. The game’s simulation tracks the morale and loyalty of followers, the public’s opinion, and the effectiveness of political strategies.
Players manage resources such as money, influence, and reputation, which can be used to hire lieutenants with unique skills. These lieutenants can be assigned missions including spreading political messages, recruiting supporters, or undermining rivals. The open-ended design allows multiple approaches—peaceful, manipulative, or aggressive—to achieving political dominance, with consequences affecting the game’s narrative progression.
