Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a first-person shooter that serves as a reboot of the classic Wolfenstein series. Players assume the role of B.J. Blazkowicz, an Allied spy and soldier tasked with infiltrating a Nazi research facility in the final years of World War II. The game blends historical settings with supernatural and experimental Nazi science, including occult research and super-soldier programs.

Gameplay combines traditional first-person shooting mechanics with stealth, exploration, and objective-based missions. Players have access to a range of period-appropriate firearms, grenades, and melee attacks, alongside limited-use supernatural abilities in certain missions. Environments include laboratories, fortresses, and crypts filled with enemy soldiers, traps, and supernatural foes.

The PC version supports both single-player and multiplayer modes. The multiplayer component, developed in part with id Software technology, offers objective-based team matches and deathmatch arenas. Graphics are powered by a modified Quake III engine, supporting enhanced 3D environments, detailed textures, and lighting effects optimized for contemporary PC hardware.
