The Lion King is a side-scrolling platform game based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name. The game follows the storyline of the movie, allowing players to control Simba through various stages of his life, from a young cub to an adult lion. The levels are based on scenes from the film, including locations such as the Pride Lands, the Elephant Graveyard, and the Hakuna Matata jungle.
The gameplay combines platforming with environmental puzzles, where players must jump across platforms, avoid hazards, and defeat enemies. As young Simba, the character primarily attacks by pouncing and roaring to stun foes. Upon reaching adulthood, Simba gains a claw swipe and a more powerful pounce. Some stages introduce unique gameplay elements, such as riding on the backs of ostriches or avoiding stampeding wildebeests.
The PC version was released as part of a multi-platform launch that included Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and other systems. While the core level design remained consistent, the PC release featured higher resolution graphics and digitalized sound to take advantage of contemporary hardware capabilities. It also supported both keyboard and gamepad controls.
