Air-Sea War and Battle are two-player games released together as the fourth official Philips Videopac cartridge (also known as “Armored Encounter! / Subchase!” in the US). In its European premium release, the set originally included a board and pawns for a hybrid video/board gaming experience, though the physical board was not part of the US version.
In Air-Sea War, one player controls a plane flying right to left, trying to drop bombs onto a player-controlled boat moving left to right and firing missiles upward. Both bombs and missiles can be guided after launch. Neutral craft in the water serve as obstacles; hitting these deducts points, while hitting the opponent adds points. The winner is the player with the most points after three minutes.
In Battle, each player controls a tank navigating around walls and mines. Players have 20 rounds to score as many hits as possible on the opponent’s tank within three minutes. Hitting a mine deducts points, but scores cannot fall below zero. Several play modes allow you to select different wall layouts, enable/disable mines, or guide projectiles. The game is inspired by Atari’s Combat and adds strategic options with varied playfields and guided missiles.
Both games are competitive and highlight the Videopac/Odyssey²’s early focus on action, reflexes, and strategic decision-making in two-player settings. These titles remain classic examples of first-generation home video game design.
