Dreamkey was an internet browser software developed for the Sega Dreamcast in Europe. It was designed to provide access to the Dreamarena online service, which enabled users to browse the web, send emails, and connect to online features of supported Dreamcast games. The software was the European counterpart to the Dream Passport software used in Japan.
Version 1.5 of Dreamkey was released in 2000 as a replacement for the original Dreamkey 1.0 that had shipped with early Dreamcast consoles. This updated version introduced better compatibility with European internet service providers and improved the stability of the browser. It also expanded support for more online-enabled titles, which required Dreamkey 1.5 or later to function properly.
Dreamkey was distributed free of charge to Dreamcast owners in Europe. Users could order the updated 1.5 disc directly from Sega through their official website or customer support. The disc came in standard Dreamcast packaging, although it was never sold commercially in retail stores.
While Dreamkey was limited compared to contemporary PC browsers, it was an important part of Sega’s online strategy for the Dreamcast. Along with Dreamarena, it laid the foundation for online multiplayer in Europe, supporting games such as Phantasy Star Online and Quake III Arena. Dreamkey continued to be updated through versions 2.0 and 3.0 before Sega discontinued Dreamarena in 2002.
