Evil Dead: Hail to the King is a survival horror game that continues the storyline of the classic Evil Dead film trilogy. Players take on the role of Ash Williams, the wisecracking hero with a chainsaw for a hand and a shotgun at his side, voiced by Bruce Campbell himself. The story is set eight years after the end of Army of Darkness, with Ash returning to the infamous cabin alongside his girlfriend Jenny, only to once again unleash unspeakable evil through the Necronomicon. As darkness descends, Ash must face relentless horrors, rescue Jenny, and confront his own evil doppelganger.
Gameplay follows the traditional survival horror format made popular by the Resident Evil series. Players explore pre-rendered environments from fixed camera angles, solve puzzles, manage scarce resources, and battle an array of enemies including Deadites, animated skeletons, and demonic creatures. Ash has access to a variety of weapons, including his signature chainsaw and boomstick, and can wield one in each hand. The game requires players to balance exploration, combat, and resource management to survive.
Atmosphere is a crucial part of Hail to the King. The game features moody orchestral music, horror sound effects, and numerous one-liners delivered by Campbell, firmly establishing its ties to the Evil Dead legacy. Familiar locations from the films, such as the cabin, cellar, and rickety bridge, are all faithfully recreated, creating a nostalgic but tense setting for fans and newcomers alike. The visuals, however, were considered underwhelming for Dreamcast standards, with some critics noting the low resolution and wooden character animations.
