Godzilla Generations is an action game released as one of the launch titles for the Dreamcast in Japan. In the game, players control one of several iconic giant monsters from the Godzilla universe, including different versions of Godzilla, Mechagodzilla, and Minilla, each with unique abilities. The main objective in each level is to destroy everything within a set time limit, including buildings, vehicles, and other structures, across five different Japanese cities.
The game features multiple modes such as Normal mode, Time Attack, and a Coliseum mode where monsters can battle each other. Destroying the environment is emphasized, with players using projectile attacks, blocking enemy attacks, and possessing a healing ability to survive. The large-scale destruction and monster abilities provide a distinctive kaiju experience.
Despite high anticipation prior to release, Godzilla Generations received mixed to negative feedback partly due to awkward controls and problematic camera angles that hampered gameplay. The graphics, although colorful, were criticized for being basic and not living up to the Dreamcast’s potential. However, fans appreciated the inclusion of multiple Godzilla incarnations and the freedom to roam destructible cities.
