In Ariel: The Little Mermaid, players guide either Ariel or King Triton through a series of underwater levels designed to rescue merpeople turned to polyps by Ursula’s curse. The gameplay unfolds across four distinct stages, including a reef maze, a sunken ship, the ruins of Atlantis, and volcanic caves. Ariel navigates via swimming, using her singing ability to dispel Ursula’s magic, while King Triton employs lightning attacks, offering two different playstyles.
The game challenges the player to collect polyps that are scattered throughout each level. Enemies such as sharks, eels, clams, skeletons, and sentient statues impede progress, demanding both precision and timing. Assistants like Sebastian, Flounder, and a creature known as the Digger Fish appear intermittently, helping remove obstacles or fend off adversaries, adding a strategic aid system to the standard platform formula.
Multiple difficulty levels—Easy, Normal, and Challenging—alter the experience. On Easy, players can reach the boss automatically after collecting all polyps. Normal adds the requirement to locate the boss area using a map, while Challenging removes the map entirely and reduces starting resources, increasing the difficulty and encouraging exploration and resource management.
Visually, the game delivers colorful 2D graphics with detailed sprites and environments that, for its platform, were serviceable and engaging. Animations of Ariel and her allies are fluid, though reviewers have noted issues such as jerky background scrolling or imperfect control responsiveness in some enemy encounters. Nonetheless, the narrative charm and thematic presentation retain the game’s appeal, especially among young players.
