Ax Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe is a spin-off of the Golden Axe series for the Game Gear, placing players in control of Ax Battler. The story follows his quest to reclaim the stolen Golden Axe from Death Adder, using a mix of action and RPG elements that differentiate it from the original beat-’em-up games.

Gameplay alternates between three distinct modes: a top-down overworld where players move between towns and face random battles; a town mode for interacting with NPCs, purchasing items, and obtaining passwords to save progress; and a side-scrolling action mode used during battle encounters and when exploring special landmarks. This structure gives the game both an exploratory feel and focused combat.

Ax Battler can collect magic vases, which function both as currency and as a resource for casting Earth, Thunder, or Fire spells. He gains new combat abilities by visiting training houses in towns. The game uses a password system instead of limited battery save, requiring players to note down codes to continue their progress later.

Reception of the game was mixed. While critics appreciated the ambitious genre blend and colorful presentation, opinions differed on execution. Some praised its Zelda II-inspired structure and depth for a handheld title, while others criticized its repetitive encounters, uneven difficulty spikes, and simplistic storytelling. It remains a notable but niche entry in the Game Gear library.
