Columns is a match-three puzzle game that served as the pack-in launch title for the Game Gear. Players manipulate vertical stacks of three jewels that fall from the top of the screen and can rotate the order of these jewels, aiming to align three or more matching colors horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to clear them. Clearing multiple rows or triggering cascading matches builds combo chains that earn higher scores.

The game includes several modes to suit different play styles. The standard mode challenges players to clear the screen for as long as possible before the jewels reach the top. Flash mode presents puzzle-like challenges in which players must remove a designated flashing jewel within a time limit. Difficulty can be adjusted by selecting different starting speeds and levels, allowing newcomers to ramp up gradually while veterans can seek intense speed.

A notable feature of the Game Gear version is its customization options. Players can change the appearance of the falling columns from jewels to blocks, dice, fruit, or playing-card symbols, giving a fun visual variety. A two-player mode is available via link cable, enabling head-to-head competitive play that enhances replayability and social engagement on the handheld format.

Visually, the game shows off the Game Gear’s backlit, color-capable screen through bright graphics and clear animations. Although less sophisticated than the arcade or home console versions, the handheld version remains visually charming and functional. The controls are intuitive and responsive, making Columns a strong choice for quick puzzle fixes on the go.
