Year: 1991
Platform: Game Gear

Pengo is a puzzle-action game developed and published by Sega for the Game Gear in 1991. The game is a port of the 1982 arcade classic in which players control a penguin named Pengo, navigating an ice maze to eliminate enemies called Sno-Bees by crushing them with ice blocks. The Game Gear version retains the core mechanics of the original, providing a portable arcade experience.

The gameplay involves moving Pengo through a grid of ice blocks, pushing blocks to crush Sno-Bees while avoiding being caught. Players can collect diamonds for bonus points and trigger short intermissions between levels. Each level increases in difficulty, introducing more aggressive enemies and increasingly complex maze layouts as players progress.

Graphics are presented in a top-down view with colorful, simple sprites. The ice maze is arranged in a grid, and Pengo’s movements are responsive, capturing the feel of the arcade original. Intermissions include animated sequences that provide variety and charm to the overall gameplay.
