Sonic Chaos (known as Sonic & Tails in Japan) is a side-scrolling platform game developed by Aspect and released exclusively for the Game Gear and Master System. This installment stands out for being the first in the series to introduce Miles “Tails” Prower as a separate playable character on handheld, each with unique abilities. The plot centers on Sonic and Tails’s quest to retrieve the stolen Chaos Emeralds from Dr. Robotnik, who has hidden them in a parallel universe and threatens to destroy South Island.
Gameplay is divided across six “zones,” each containing three levels, with the third level culminating in a boss fight. The game emphasizes fast-paced platforming reminiscent of earlier Sonic titles, while adding new abilities for both Sonic (such as the Super Peel-Out and Rocket Shoes) and Tails, who can fly for brief periods. Collecting rings, smashing item monitors for power-ups, and locating hidden Chaos Emeralds are essential gameplay elements. Multiple endings are available based on the number of Chaos Emeralds collected throughout the adventure.
Sonic Chaos is also known for its vibrant graphics and smooth controls for the hardware, although some levels were criticized for their simplicity and lack of challenge. The game features a password system for progress saving, and differences exist between regional releases; for example, “Gigalopolis Zone” was renamed “Gigapolis Zone” for the U.S. market. It was well received for bringing the Sonic experience to portable play, and was later included in several compilation collections.
