Sonic the Hedgehog: Spinball for Game Gear is an action-pinball hybrid where Sonic acts as the ball, navigating pinball-table levels to thwart Dr. Robotnik’s plans. Robotnik has constructed the Veg-O-Fortress atop a volcano and aims to transform the animals of Mobius into robots using this mechanical stronghold. In response, Sonic is launched into the fortress’s defenses, which function as intricate pinball mechanisms, to free the captive creatures and secure the Chaos Emeralds needed to stop Robotnik.
Gameplay involves four unique stages: Toxic Pools, Lava Powerhouse, The Machine, and The Final Showdown. At each stage, the player must utilize flippers, bumpers, and other classic pinball elements to direct Sonic, while avoiding hazards and collecting Chaos Emeralds. The first two stages require three Chaos Emeralds each, while the third and fourth need five before unlocking the boss battle. After defeating each boss, players can access a bonus stage known as the Bonus Cage, where collecting rings, points, and power-ups adds to the overall score and survivability.
The Game Gear version diverges from the Genesis original in level layouts and visual details, designed to suit the handheld’s capabilities. It maintains the core blend of fast-paced physics-based action and puzzle-solving, but introduces more linear platforming sections and slightly simplified stage elements. The controls allow Sonic to influence his movement in midair in addition to standard pinball controls, providing greater agency for skillful play.
Reviews for the Game Gear release were mixed; critics averaged a score of 67%, while player ratings hover around 3.2 out of 5.
