Sonic the Hedgehog for Game Gear adapts the iconic Genesis platformer to Sega’s 8-bit handheld, delivering a fast-paced experience with distinct stage layouts and unique features. Players guide Sonic as he races through six thematic zones—some original to this version—each divided into three acts. The quest centers on thwarting Dr. Robotnik, who has ensnared animal inhabitants in robotic forms and hidden the six Chaos Emeralds throughout the game’s regular levels, rather than in special stages as in the Genesis version.

Each zone’s final act features a boss battle against Robotnik, with differences tailored for the smaller Game Gear screen. The game includes power-ups such as shields, speed boosts, and extra lives, collected from item monitors. Sonic collects rings, which protect from hits and grant extra lives in multiples of 100, while accessing a pinball-inspired bonus stage when finishing a level with at least 50 rings. Critical to completion is finding all Chaos Emeralds, as these determine the game’s ending.

The Game Gear adaptation maintains the original’s trademark speed, vibrant graphics, and memorable soundtrack, though redesigned for the handheld’s hardware. Some levels introduce vertical scrolling or automatic movement, offering varied gameplay beyond side-scrolling platforming. The controls and overall feel remain faithful, albeit with differences in level design due to the lower resolution and technical constraints of the handheld.
