Tempo Jr. is a platform game and sequel to Tempo on the Sega 32X, released for the Game Gear. Players control the anthropomorphic grasshopper Tempo as he navigates through various musically themed levels to rescue his kidnapped friend Katy from the evil Zenza. The game is designed with a focus on younger players, featuring simplified controls and accessible gameplay.

Each level is divided into two stages followed by a boss fight, with the objective to find a Keynote item that unlocks the exit. Tempo attacks by shooting musical notes that stun enemies, which can then be kicked away. He can also use his wings to hover, move faster, or control his fall, adding verticality to platforming. The game includes a strength gauge that depletes when Tempo takes damage but can be replenished by collecting musical notes and CDs dropped by enemies. A special Dance Attack can be triggered when the gauge is full, turning nearby enemies into Gold Coins that can be used for bonus games.

Tempo Jr. features no instant-death traps; the character bounces off hazards, allowing recovery. Bonus games unlock after boss fights if the player has collected enough Gold Coins, providing opportunities to gain extra points and lives. The game progresses linearly through themed “performances,” culminating in a final showdown with Zenza after two “Grudge Matches” against previous bosses.
