Actua Golf, also released as VR Golf ’97 in some regions, is a golf simulation game developed and published by Gremlin Interactive. It is part of the Actua Sports series, which aimed to provide realistic sports simulations using 3D polygon graphics. The game was released for Sega Saturn, PlayStation, and MS-DOS, marking Gremlin’s attempt to bring advanced sports visuals to both console and computer audiences.
The game features a full 18-hole golf course rendered entirely in 3D, a notable distinction at a time when many competing golf titles still relied on digitized backgrounds or partial 3D environments. Players can choose from different camera angles to follow the action, including a viewpoint directly behind the golfer. Shot mechanics involve both power and accuracy controls, with additional factors such as wind and terrain influencing gameplay.
Actua Golf includes multiple gameplay modes, such as stroke play, match play, and tournament options. A training mode allows players to practice individual shots or putts. Multiplayer is supported for up to four players, who take turns on the same console. Commentary, provided by British golf broadcaster Peter Alliss, adds to the game’s presentation, offering situational remarks depending on the player’s performance.
