DecAthlete is a track and field sports game developed by Sega AM3 and released for the Sega Saturn in 1996. Known as Athlete Kings in Europe and Kono Supōtsu wa Kurayzee! in Japan, the game focuses on the ten events of the decathlon, offering an arcade-style approach to athletic competition. Each event is designed with simplified controls that emphasize timing and precision, making it accessible while still providing challenge.
The game features eight fictional international athletes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses across the ten decathlon disciplines. Events include the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters, 110 meters hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500 meters. The design emphasizes exaggerated character animations and vibrant visuals, consistent with Sega’s arcade heritage.
DecAthlete was first released in arcades on Sega’s ST-V (Sega Titan Video) hardware before being ported to the Saturn. The home version retained the core mechanics and graphical style of the arcade release while offering additional play modes, including single-player training and competitive two-player matches.
