Sakura Taisen (also known as Sakura Wars) is a cross-genre video game released in Japan in 1996 for the Sega Saturn. Developed by Red Company in collaboration with Sega’s CS2 R&D (Overworks), it was the inaugural title in what would become the long-running Sakura Taisen multimedia franchise.

The game takes place in an alternate historical setting during the Taishō era in Japan. Players assume the role of Ichiro Ogami, a young naval officer assigned as the captain of the “Flower Division”—an all-female theater troupe that secretly pilots steam-powered mechs to protect Tokyo from supernatural threats.

Gameplay alternates between narrative-driven “Dramatic Adventure” sections and tactical skirmishes. In adventure mode, players explore locations, engage in time-sensitive dialogue via the LIPS (Live Interactive Picture System) mechanic, and build relationships with team members through dialogue choices. These interactions influence both character bonds and combat effectiveness. Combat sequences play out on isometric battlefields, where strategic positioning and special moves are crucial, though characters do not use traditional experience points or equipment systems.
