Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island is a platform game in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, originally released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and later adapted for the Sega Saturn. Unlike the traditional 2D side-scrolling design of earlier Sonic games, this entry uses an isometric perspective, giving it a pseudo-3D appearance. The game focuses on Sonic rescuing small birds known as Flickies, which are trapped inside enemies by Dr. Robotnik.
The gameplay requires Sonic to free Flickies by destroying enemies and then guiding the birds to warp rings. Once all Flickies in a stage are saved, the player can progress to the next level. Each zone consists of multiple acts and culminates in a boss battle. The Saturn version enhances the experience with improved graphics, smoother animation, and a different soundtrack compared to the original Genesis release.
Special Stages, accessible by delivering Flickies to Sonic’s friends such as Tails or Knuckles, feature full 3D courses on the Saturn. In these stages, players must collect rings to earn Chaos Emeralds, adding to the variety and challenge of the gameplay.
