Dungeon Siege III is an action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Square Enix. Released in June 2011 for PlayStation 3 (as well as Xbox 360 and PC), it is the third major entry in the Dungeon Siege series and the first console-focused title in the franchise. The story is set in the fictional kingdom of Ehb, roughly 150 years after the events of the previous game, and follows survivors of the once mighty 10th Legion as they attempt to rebuild and protect the realm.
The gameplay features an isometric perspective adapted for consoles, blending real-time action with RPG elements such as character classes, abilities, loot drops, and cooperative play. Players can choose from four different hero characters, each with unique weapons and skill trees, and can switch stances during combat to chain abilities and adapt to different enemy types. The PlayStation 3 version supports both local two-player co-op and online cooperative play for up to four players.
The console adaptation also emphasizes streamlined controls and interface for the DualShock 3, preserving the series’ loot-heavy progression while making it accessible for console gamers. While visually competent for the generation, the PlayStation 3 version shares largely the same content as its counterparts, with differences mainly in resolution and frame-rate due to hardware limitations.
Critically, the game received mixed to above average reviews. Reviewers praised its loot mechanics, cooperative modes, and accessibility on consoles, but some critics pointed out narrative simplicity and that it diverged from the deeper tactical roots of the original PC-only titles. The PlayStation 3 version in particular was noted for satisfying action-RPG gameplay in a console format.
