Killzone 3 is the direct sequel to Killzone 2 and continues the story of the conflict between the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance (ISA) and the Helghast Empire. Developed by Guerrilla Games exclusively for PlayStation 3, the game picks up immediately after the events of its predecessor, with the ISA forces stranded on the Helghan homeworld and fighting for survival after the death of Helghast leader Scolar Visari.
The single-player campaign follows returning protagonist Sergeant Tomas “Sev” Sevchenko as he battles through varied environments including arctic regions, alien jungles, and orbital installations. The gameplay builds on the cover mechanics and weighty combat of Killzone 2 but adds more variety in mission structure, new enemy types, and more cinematic storytelling. Killzone 3 also introduced jetpack segments and vehicular combat, expanding gameplay possibilities.
One of the key technical advancements of Killzone 3 is its support for stereoscopic 3D and PlayStation Move, offering alternate control schemes and presentation modes. Graphically, it pushed the PlayStation 3’s capabilities further, with improved lighting, animation, and scale compared to its predecessor.
Multiplayer returned with new modes, including Guerrilla Warfare and Operations, a mode that combined narrative elements with team-based objectives. Killzone 3 also introduced a more streamlined class system, unlock progression, and improved matchmaking.
