Lair is a fantasy-themed action game developed by Factor 5 exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Set in a world devastated by volcanic eruptions and torn by war, players take on the role of Rohn Partridge, a dragon-riding soldier fighting for the Asylian Empire against the opposing Mokai faction. The game blends aerial combat, ground attacks, and large-scale battles from the back of various dragon types.
The gameplay centers on dragon-mounted combat, with players engaging in dogfights, bombing runs, and melee-style encounters. Missions vary between objectives such as defending fortresses, escorting units, or eliminating enemy leaders. Initially, the game was notable for its reliance on the PlayStation 3’s Sixaxis motion controls for steering the dragon, which received mixed reactions due to control imprecision. A later update introduced the option to use analog stick controls, which improved overall responsiveness.
Lair was one of the early showcases for the PlayStation 3’s graphical capabilities, featuring large draw distances, dynamic lighting, and cinematic cutscenes. The game also included an orchestral score composed by John Debney and recorded with the London Philharmonia Orchestra.
Despite its technical ambition, Lair received mixed to negative reviews at launch. Critics praised its visual presentation and scale but criticized its control scheme and repetitive gameplay. The game is often cited as an example of the risks associated with motion control implementation in early PS3 titles.
