MAG (Massive Action Game) is a multiplayer-only first-person shooter developed by Zipper Interactive exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Released in early 2010, the game was designed around large-scale online battles, supporting up to 256 players simultaneously in a single match—an unprecedented number for console shooters at the time.
The game’s core concept centers on faction-based warfare. Players choose to align with one of three private military companies: Raven Industries, S.V.E.R. (Seryi Volk Executive Response), or Valor Company. Each faction features unique aesthetics and gear. The experience system allows players to level up and unlock new weapons and abilities, promoting long-term engagement.
MAG features multiple game modes with escalating player counts. Smaller modes like Suppression and Sabotage support 64 and 128 players respectively, while the signature Domination mode accommodates 256 players split into platoons with assigned objectives. A hierarchical command structure gives players leadership roles—such as squad leader or platoon leader—unlocking strategic tools like airstrikes and UAV reconnaissance.
The game was a technical showcase for the PlayStation 3, leveraging server-side processing and advanced networking to maintain stability during large-scale battles. However, it required a constant online connection and had no offline or single-player component. While praised for its ambition and scale, MAG faced criticism for a lack of variety and steep learning curve for new players. Official servers were shut down in January 2014, rendering the game unplayable.
